What Does a Bath Trap Do?
A bath trap sits below the bath waste and holds a small amount of water, known as the water seal. This seal stops drain smells coming back up through the plughole, while still letting waste water flow away. Every bath needs one, whether the pipework is hidden behind a bath panel or left on show under a freestanding bath.
Plastic Bath Traps for Panelled Baths
If your bath has a side panel, the trap will be out of sight, so a practical plastic trap is usually the best choice. Look for a low-profile body that fits the space under the bath, and an outlet that suits the pipe you are connecting to, whether plastic, copper or lead.
What Is a Shallow Seal Trap?
A shallow seal trap holds less water than a deep seal trap, so its body is shorter. That makes it a good fit beneath a bath, where there is often very little space between the bath and the floor. It still keeps a water seal in place to block odours from the drain.
Exposed Traps for Freestanding Baths
Freestanding and roll top baths leave the pipework on view, so the trap becomes part of the design. Exposed traps with matching outlet pipes come in finishes such as chrome, black and brushed brass, so you can match them to your taps and bath feet.
Complete Waste and Trap Sets
If you are fitting a freestanding bath from scratch, a combined set saves you matching parts one by one. Sets can bring together the trap, the exposed waste and overflow, and shrouds that neatly cover the pipework. Check that the set suits your bath's waste and overflow hole sizes.
Check Before You Buy
Most bath traps use a 1½" (40mm) connection. Before ordering, check the space under your bath, the size of the waste and overflow holes, and the type of pipe you are connecting to. For an exposed installation, choose a trap in the same finish as your taps and waste so everything looks consistent.
